And the Winners are…

We are extremely proud and excited to highlight the recent winners of The San Francisco Chronicle Wine Competition!  This is the largest competition of North America wines and Yolo County is well represented.  Berryessa Gap, Great Bear Vineyards, Matchbook Wine Company,  Elevation Ten Winery, and Heringer Estates all won multiple medals with a grand total of 35 medals awarded for the entire group!  

Here are some of the highlights:

  • Berryessa Gap Vineyards won a Best of Class medal for the 2020 “Her Majesty” This big, lush cuvée has balanced aromas of ripe fruit, cocoa and spice. Full-bodied with firm tannins and tangy acidity, Her Majesty has a flavor profile of concentrated red and black cherries and rich finish that entices the palate. Double Golds for the 2021 Verdejo and 2020 Petite Sirah as well. In addition, L’Apéro les Trois’ BGV’s new apéritif brand in its inaugural bottling of its Green Walnut Apéritif also was awarded a Best in Class medal.   • Great Bear Vineyards was awarded a Gold Medal for the 2021 Chardonnay  “A lean, crisp Chardonnay with aromas of baked brioche and mixed citrus that transition on the palate to alluring flavors of ripe orange, lemon, white flowers, and herbs”. Also A Silver Medal for their 2020 Tempranillo which is still young for a rich bold wine yet ready to drink now, but it will continue to improve with age...if you can resist the temptation to drink it now!



  • Matchbook Wine Company walked away with five Silver medals, one was awarded to The Arsonist Red Blend “This full-bodied blend delivers big flavors of black cherry, chocolate, cranberry and black pepper; barrel aging heightens the sweet plum and mocha notes” At Matchbook every wine is bottled and grown on their estate.



  • Elevation Ten was awarded a Double Gold for their 2018 Cabernet Sauvignon.  “The bouquet is focused and tightly-wound, with aromas of cherry cobbler, plum, black olive, dried sage and toasty oak with nuances of black pepper and mint” In addition, five other wines were awarded medals!



  • Heringer Estates won Gold for their 2022 Artisan Series Generations “A dynamic red wine blend that embraces generations of love for the land” In addition, 15 more medals for many other varieties! Read more about their award winning wines here




Now is the perfect time to visit these award winning and welcoming wineries and stock up on some bottles or even a case as we head into warmer weather and spring and summer time gatherings.
