Winters Highlands

( What’s an AVA? )

AVA stands for American Viticultural Area. It is a federally designated, geographically defined grape-growing region in the United States, recognized for its unique climate, soil, and elevation.

The Winters Highlands AVA is one of California’s newest wine-growing regions, officially recognized in 2023 and located in the rolling foothills west of the town of Winters in Yolo and Solano Counties. The AVA encompasses approximately 7,300 acres along the eastern edge of the Coast Range, where cooling marine air funnels through the Berryessa Gap each evening. This unique combination of warm days, cool nights, well-drained soils, and a long growing season allows grapes to achieve full ripeness while retaining natural acidity and balance.

The region has quickly earned a reputation for producing exceptional Rhône, Spanish, and Mediterranean varieties, along with other distinctive wines that reflect the unique character of this corner of Yolo County.

Today, the AVA is home to four estate wineries that helped champion its designation: Berryessa Gap Vineyards, , whose vineyards overlook the iconic Berryessa Gap and showcase a wide range of varietals; Turkovich Family Wines, a family-owned winery known for estate-grown Rhône and Spanish varieties; Collina De Bella, a boutique producer crafting acclaimed wines from historic Syrah and Tannat vineyards within the AVA; and Fjord Oak combining estate-grown wines with a picturesque vineyard setting that celebrates the connection between farming, community, and the land- emboding the pioneering spirit of the Winters Highlands.

…..

The region has become particularly known for Mediterranean and Rhône-style varieties, including Tempranillo, Syrah, Petite Sirah, Grenache, Albariño, Sauvignon Blanc, and Malbec, producing wines that are expressive, food-friendly, and reflective of the area's distinct terroir.
